Click on this link and spend a few minutes reflecting on the genius of Josh Freese. I have had the pleasure of recording Josh and have always liked the guy, but this is inspired. Nice one Josh.

AC/DC

After finishing up the Social Code record I flew to Memphis to see the Answer play with AC/DC, their second last gig of this leg of the tour. After the show we were in a bar on Beale street when Angus' tech and all around great guy Takumi and the bands in house amp genius Rick from Wizard Amps came in. I had never met Rick before but have definitely used and loved his amps. Rick really knows his stuff and clearly loves what he does.

We hung with them until their bus call before taking the Answer guys to a cool after hours juke joint on the other side of town. Takumi and Rick had a couple of picks from that days show in their pockets and the picture below really goes to show just how awesome a player Malcolm Young is. The black guitar pick is that worn down after just one song! Apparently Malcolm does that amount of damage to his picks every song he plays!!

Last day in Edmonton

The last day of the record is usually a pretty action packed one, it always seems to be the day when the last few harmonies, keyboard parts, guitar overdubs and that essential flugelhorn part the record is crying out for and wouldn't sound complete without, are thought up and added.

Also quite often the singer or the producer makes the call that the singer sounds so good we should probably re-cut that one verse of that particular song. This of course comes out so good that the whole song ends up getting re-sung and that generally segues nicely into a couple of others getting the same treatment.

Needless to say the last day of the Social Code record was no exception and to his credit Travis (and by that I mean the singer of the band and not me refering to myself in the third person) delivered admirably.

The record is really sounding great and tomorrow I'll be back in sunny California which I'm really looking forward to, though the local weather forecasters are threatening tomorrow will be a positively balmy -15 day in Edmonton.

Three musicians and a drummer

There used to be a joke that a band consisted of three musicians and a drummer, but now it's more like three musicians hunched over laptops.

Three of the guys in Social Code working on their 'World of Warcraft' skills. Wait, you didn't think they were actually working on music did you?
